Wayne Rooney has announced he is retiring from international football after rejecting a call-up from England’s manager, Gareth Southgate.
Rooney made this known earlier today, August 23 just after Southgate tried inviting him to represent his country in their matches against Malta and Slovakia in September.
Rooney is the most capped England player with 53 goals in 119 appearances including 71 wins.
He made his debut for his nation in a friendly against Australia as a 17-year old in 2003. He went on to score his first goal for England against Macedonia later that year in September.
This comes after he captained his country to a 3-0 win over Scotland last November.
