Pandemonium broke out on Sunday in Ajaokuta village, Ajaokuta local government area of Kogi State when a happy trigger police officer allegedly shot dead an HND graduate during a political rally.
The deceased, Mallam Mohammed Ismail a father of one, met his untimely death while attending a political rally to flag off the formal declaration of one of the chairmanship aspirants of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the local government, Mallam Abdulrahaman Danasabe.
The sad occurrence at the football pitch of the Local Government Secondary School in Ajaokuta village occurred when the aspirant was unfolding his plans to move the local government forward. Source said while the occasion was going on, the police officer (name withheld) suddenly opened fire and the strayed bullets penetrated the deceased left rib.
The development caused confusion in the area as those at the venue of the rally ran for their safety, scampering in different directions to avoid being hit by bullets. The eyewitness disclosed that the policeman was already under the influence of alcohol, as he was said to be heavily drunk at the time he committed the act.
Efforts to save the life of the deceased proved abortive as he was said to have died shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital. The deceased, an HND graduate of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was buried around 7.30 pm on Sunday night. The state Police Public Relation Officer, Mr. William Ayah who confirmed the incident, said the force had open further investigation on the case.
