El-Rufai threatens to sue alleged ‘purveyors of fake news’

Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, on Friday, threatened to sue two persons, whom he claimed, were spreading fake news about the state.

El-Rufai made his intention to sue known on his verified Twitter handle, @elrufai. He was reacting to a video shared on Twitter by Comrade Steve-Kefason, @realKefason, alleging that some teachers in Kaduna were protesting over unpaid salaries.

The governor refuted this claim. He tweeted at Steve-KefasoN, “Mr. @realKefason: This is false and you know it. It is injurious falsehood and charges will be filed against you. Hope you will have the courage not to disappear or claim persecution! ~ Nasir El-Rufai.”

When a Twitter user, asked the governor how many persons, he would be charging to court, he said “As many as necessary to prevent purveyors of falsehood and division from thriving. The use of social media’s anonymity to peddle injurious falsehood, hate speech and division must be fought. @realKefason and Paul Enenche will have their days in court sooner or later – no doubt!”

He added,”Tell that to the Rwandans where such ‘speech’ led to the killing of 800,000 people in two weeks. Free speech should not be false, injurious, irresponsible, hateful and divisive. The Penal Code is clear. The Criminal Code is clear. Don’t like it, relocate to where there is no law!”
