Corps member arraigned for killing Osun roadside hawker

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Feranmi Odedele, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for reckless driving and the killing of one Pelumi Olasunkanmi.

The death of Olasunkanmi, a 16-year-old Junior Secondary School 3 pupil of the Coker Memorial High School, Ikirun, occurred last week Friday, when he was hit by a car driven by Odedele along the Osogbo-Gbongan Road.

The 29-year-old Odedele was said to have driven the car in a reckless manner and hit the deceased, who was selling garden eggs by the roadside.

Odedele was said to be returning to Osogbo from Ibadan to resume at his place of primary assignment, having been posted by the NYSC to Osun State for his mandatory one year service.

Addressing the court, the police prosecutor, Mr Joshua Oladoye, said the accused killed Olasunkanmi while driving a Honda car with number plate Lagos MUN 187 CU around 11.30am.

Oladoye stated that the offence contravened Section 81 (1) Cap 115, Vol 6, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

The counsel for the accused, Mr Bola Abimbola-Ige, while reacting to the claims of the prosecutor, moved an oral application for his client’s bail and assured the court that Odedele would not jump bail.

While ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara, said, “The accused person is reluctantly granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.”

He adjourned the matter till January 30, 2019, for mention.
