A woman identified simply as Mama Tola yesterday lost her life while crossing the road at Molete area of Ibadan, Oyo State. Residents of the area said Mama Tola fell while crossing the road at the roundabout and was crushed by a fast moving trailer. The incident, which occurred about 11a.m., drew the sympathy of many people including passers-by. Some witnesses said the woman who was in her early 40s was unlucky to have fallen on the road when she slipped while crossing the road.
“We suspected that the woman was going to her place of work, because we saw her at the other side of the road when she wanted to cross. Her slippers slipped, she lost her balance and fell. She was unable to control herself and quickly escape while the oncoming truck crushed her.
The truck driver could not control the vehicle because it was on a high speed and also it was on a slope. The truck was coming from Challenge,” one of the witnesses said. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) were seen at the scene with an ambulance.
They eventually evacuated the mangled remains of the woman to the morgue of the Adeoyo General Hospital. Some sympathisers, who took the mobile phone of the woman, called her husband, to inform him of the unfortunate incident. However, he could not be reached before our correspondent left the scene. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the incident. He said: “The case is under investigation.
