2019 Election: Opposition unites as Fresh PDP collapses

A splinter group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ‘Fresh PDP’ has collapsed and expressed readiness to work with the mainstream party leadership to unseat the current government in the 2019 elections.

The group led by one Emmanuel Nwosu had opened a factional secretariat at Asokoro, and threatened to inaugurate a factional National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday this week.

But when Sunday Telegraph visited the secretariat last week, it was under lock and key and the PDP flag hoisted there, removed.

At a meeting with a former PDP National Chairman, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, a former Deputy Director General of Prof. Tunde Adeniran Campaign Organisation, Olukayode Akindele, said the Fresh PDP has ceased to exist.

Akindele, who claimed to be the interim chairman of the group, said that they have decided to sheath their sword in the interest of Nigeria and the 2019 general elections.

“The cracks that you noticed in the PDP have been sealed up. I am delighted to tell you that we have collapsed into the mainstream PDP. We have assurances from our leaders and the we will not have a parallel NWC Monday,” he said.

“We are now united to sweep away this government that is insensitive to human needs and failed to provide security and welfare of the people which is the basic reason for government’s existence come 2019.

On his part, Nwodo said that the reconciliation was reached with the knowledge of the Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Working Committee (NWC) and other organs of the party.

“If the Fresh PDP was allowed to form a structure on Monday, they would have given legitimacy to our members to leave the PDP.

“We have learnt our lessons and we are coming back more prepared and resolute to change the fortunes of this country,” Nwodo said.

Similarly, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said, “What was perceived as crisis is over.”
