Home-based Super Eagles captain Ikechukwu Ezenwa might have played his way into the Nigerian squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia following his stellar showing at the ongoing African Nations Championship in Morocco.
The Enyimba Football Club goalkeeper emerged the man-of-the-match as the Coach Salisu Yusuf-led team came from behind to seal a 2-1 win over Angola in a quarterfinal tie of the tournament on Sunday.
Rohr said he was thrilled with the goalkeeper’s performance and hinted the shot-stopper might have sealed his spot in his squad for Russia 2018.
“Ezenwa is a good goalkeeper; he showed this Sunday, he saved three, four one-on-one situations. He’s a local player who is good to play for the main Super Eagles. I am happy about his performance today; it shows he is fit for the World Cup,” he said.
Ezenwa was in goal in both matches against Cameroon during the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup but his chances of making the cut was reduced with the emergence of youngster Francis Uzoho and impending recall of Vincent Enyeama.
Pundits had posited that Ezenwa’s slot on the plane to Russia depended largely on his performance at CHAN and he seemed to have answered all the questions with his showing in Morocco.
