There is palpable fear among senators who are strong supporters of President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, over his possible return to the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) tomorrow, to face three count charge of 18 counts bordering on false assets declaration earlier instituted against him.
The senators, all of whom spoke to New Telegraph on condition of anonymity for obvious reasons, expressed concerns that the return of Saraki to the CCT, after he was acquitted on the whole 18 charges was an indication that Saraki was a victim of high level political witchhunt.
One of them pointedly expressed fears that the matter may get to a point where it would be beyond Saraki and his supporters to handle, saying that it was not common in the nation’s judicial proceedings and processes, for people acquitted of alleged offences to be sent back to court to face such cases afresh.
“You people in the media know as much as I do, that there are both internal and external forces against the President of the Senate. It is not a matter of being afraid. I am not afraid of anything but I am telling you that what is happening in this country is worrisome. ”
How would explain the scenario where the CCT critically looked at the issues and acquitted Saraki for want of evidence, only for the Court of Appeal to say no, you have to go back and face three counts out of 18. Don’t you see the handwriting of a desperate enemy to remove Saraki at all cost.”
