Woman jailed six months for stealing N6.7m

Justice O. O. Majekudunmi of an Ogun State High Court yesterday sentenced a woman, Folashde Olukemi Adeleke, to six months imprisonment for stealing N6,750,000.

Majekudunmi convicted and sentenced Adeleke to six months imprisonment without an option of fine on a two-court charge bordering on stealing contrary to Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap Act C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The convict, who was arraigned by the Ibadan Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on November 25, 2016, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her.

Adeleke’s journey to the prison followed a petition to the EFCC by a complainant (name withheld) saying that the convict defrauded her of N6,750,000 under the guise that she had a four bedroom bungalow available for sale in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The petition added that after payment was made to the convict’s account domiciled in one of the new generation banks, she allegedly diverted the money to her own use instead of transmitting the money to the owner of the property.

This resulted to the owner of the property closing business with the petitioner and all efforts made to retrieve the money were futile.

One of the charges to which she was convicted reads: “Folashade Olukemi Adeleke on or about the 18th of November 2013 at Abeokuta within the Abeokuta judicial division stole the sum of N4, 000,000.00 only property of one Saheed Salawe which sum you received from (name withheld) as part payment for the purchase of a property situate and lying at Ajebo Road Estate, Abeokuta.”
