Again, herdsmen kill four persons in Benue

Armed men believed to be of Fulani extraction on Sunday evening invaded Agatu and Guma local government areas of Benue State and killed four people. The herdsmen reportedly beheaded one of the victims.

 

In Agatu, it was learnt, the herders had ambushed the victims, who were among seven people on their way to the stream to bathe. They opened fire on the people while three of them died instantly.

 

Witnesses said that as a result of the killings, many people especially women and children fled their homes and were taking refuge in areas deemed safe. Sources said the matter was reported to the soldiers and other security agents in the area, who urged the people to bury the dead.

 

A resident said several people were seriously injured during in the attack. The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the killing in Agatu during a meeting with Fulani leaders in the state at the Police Headquarters, Makurdi.

 

In the same vein, Governor Samuel Ortom disclosed that there was an attack in his local government, Guma, where one person was killed. Ortom said this when he received the representatives of United Nations High Commission on Refugees to Nigeria and ECOWAS. The governor tasked security agencies on the need to improve their operations and be more proactive to curtail the killings across the country.
