110,000 people displaced in Benue floods

Over 110,000 people in 24 communities including the state capital, Makurdi have been sacked by the floods that have ravaged Benue according to reports from The Benue State Emergency Management Agency.

Mr Boniface Ortese, the executive secretary of the agency told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that over 2,769 households had been affected one way or the other.

 

Some of the places affected according to him include; Achusa, Idye, Wurukum Market, Genabe, Industrial Layout, Demekpe, Wadata Market, Katungu, behind the Civil Service Commission, Agboughul-Wadata.

Meanwhile President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday  ordered emergency services to immediately render assistance to victims of the flooding.

 

Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media and Publicity), Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement. He said that the President “received with great concern reports of the flooding in Benue State.”

“Consequently, the President has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately mobilise personnel and resources to come to the aid of the victims of the flooding.

 

The President is closely monitoring the situation, and will be receiving regular updates on the scale of the disaster, as well as the Federal Government’s humanitarian response.

 

“The President extends his sympathies to the Government and people of Benue State, and assures that the Federal Government will make available any assistance needed to enable the State Government and the affected communities cope with and surmount the impact of the flooding,” Shehu said.
