Buhari may address Nigerians on decision to re-contest

President Muhammdu Buhari may, on return from his trip to the United Kingdom, address a press conference to state why he is seeking for re-election, a party source told New Telegraph yesterday.

That is following the array of criticisms that have trailed his declaration to seek for a second term on Monday.

The party source said that most of the issues being raised against the President and his government would be addressed at the press conference.

Since President Buhari declared his ambition to seek for re-election on Monday, the President and his party have come under serious attacks from Nigerians. The source, a high ranking member of the party said that they have advised the president to speak to Nigerians on his return. “He would need to explain it to Nigerians when he returns. We are telling him to do that”, said the source.

The APC source, speaking on the declaration of the President said: “The President would address a press conference, where he would speak to Nigerians on why he is seeking for re-election and address some of the issues being raised by Nigerians.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress has written the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to notify the Commission of its planned Congresses and Convention.

The APC’s National Organizing Secretary (NOS), Senator Osita Izunaso, stated this at the party national secretariat yesterday.

According to the NOS, the party wrote the letter yesterday in preparation for its Congresses and Convention.

The Electoral Act 2011 provides that 21 days statutory notice be given to the INEC by political parties for congresses and convention.

The APC elective congresses and convention, which would commence from next month till June was to be aborted with a National Executive Committee meeting (NEC) tenure elongation decision.

But this was overruled by the President, who declared tenure elongation as illegal and unconstitutional.
