NBS: Edo tops 2017 drugs’ seizure chart with 45,338kg

 

Statistics on drugs seizure across the country showed that Edo State tops the chart with 45,338 kg seizures out of 309,713 kilogrammes of drugs seized across the country in 2017.

 

Similarly, Zamfara State recorded the least figure of drug seizures with 87.21kg, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report on drug seizure and arrest in 2017 obtained yesterday had confirmed.

 

According to NBS, of 309,713 kg seizures nationwide, a total of 191,353 kg were cannabis, representing 61.8 per cent of the total drug seized within the period under review. This was followed closely by Tramadol with 96,136kg, indicating 31 per cent of the total drug seized.

 

The bureau said 10,290 arrests were made in 2017, with 9,626 being male while 664 were female.

No fewer than 1,605 or 15.6 per cent were convicted in 2017 while 1,167 or 11.3 per cent were still being counseled. It said 92,687 kg of exhibits were destroyed and 317 hectares of farmland were also destroyed during the period under review.
