8.2m pupils get free meal in 24 states, Presidency says

The Presidency on Wednesday said 8,260,984 pupils were now being served free meal daily under the present administration’s National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, a component of its Social Investment Programme.

It said the benefitting pupils were drawn from 45,394 public primary schools in 24 states of the federation.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Akande listed the states where pupils are currently benefitting from the school feeding programme to include Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue and Plateau.

Others, according to him, are Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Jigawa, Niger, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Ondo and Borno.

Akande added that the scheme had created over 80,000 direct jobs with 87,261 cooks currently engaged in the 24 participating states.

He said all the 36 states and Abuja would eventually benefit from the programme.
