See How Flood Submerged Community In Ondo, Destroys Property

Property worth millions of naira were on Monday destroyed by flood which occurred after a downpour at Ikare Akoko, in the Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The downpour, which started at about 6pm, was reported to have wrecked havoc on some streets of the town like Ilepa, Jubilee, Ese, Okorun, Semusemu, Okoja and Iku, among others.

A source told The Punch the Victory College area of the town was worst hit, adding that scores of vehicles, motorcycles, shops and other valuables were submerged by the flood, but no life was reportedly lost in the incident.

The source attributed the development to the blockage of drainage channels in the town which did not allow free flow of water during the heavy rain.

He said, “The rain caused havoc in the community; many properties were submerged. Almost all the roads in town were submerged, there is no major road to pass. There is a need for the government to intervene in this matter.

“The residents, most especially the shop owners, were badly affected because they lost their goods to the flood. But we thank God that nobody was swept away or died.”

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Yemi Olowolabi, said the government would take action on their matter, adding that the administration had started repair of roads across the 18 local government areas of the state.

He said, “Definitely the government will act on the development. Ikare Akoko is one of the major towns in the state and such incident should not happen without any action from the government. This government has been doing everything possible to repair and reconstruct our roads. The issue of flooding will soon be a thing of the past.”
