Okowa to INEC, security agencies: Global eyes on elections conduct

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure that the forthcoming general elections are not riddled with flaws and malpractices. This was as the governor urged the commission to play by the rules and make ensure that the exercise is free, fair and credible to make the democratic dispensation more robust.

He disclosed this yesterday when the management of Silverbird Communications Limited, led by the Chairman of Editorial Board, Mr. Jacob Akinyemi Johnson, visited him in Asaba, the state capital, to present his letter of nomination as the 2018 Silverbird Man Of the Year Award. Okowa, who said credible elections, would reaffirm Nigeria’s position as the giant of Africa before the international communities, noted:

“Nigerians expect that the country will have free and fair election in February and March, while the security agencies and INEC are expected to play by the rules so that we can have a country where democracy can grow, and a country that can take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

The world looks up to us to get it right.” He promised that the award would spur him to work for the people of the state and foster unity, peace and progress among the ethnic nationalities in the state. He said the awards he had received in recognition of his administration’s drive in road construction, provision of quality education and meaningful health, rural and urban renewal projects were testimonies of dignity of labour.
