Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has disclosed that 66 communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of the State have been ravaged by flood.
Mallam Garba Salihu, the Acting Director-General of the Agency, made this known in Minna on Wednesday. He said that the incident happened on Tuesday and destroyed houses, livestock and farmlands.
According to him, the heavy downpour on Tuesday rendered many people homeless. He said that the State’s Deputy Governor’s village, Ketso, was affected too.
Salihu said that the Agency had assessed the area and displaced persons were being evacuated.
He further said that the Agency would forward the report of the assessment to the State Government which was already making plans to relocate communities in flood-prone areas.
He then called on the Federal Government to intervene by sending a Presidential Committee on flooding to the State to assess the level of damage.
