Federal lawmakers in the Nigerian Senate accuse the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Mallami of possible complicity in the sudden return and reinstatement of former Chairman of the Presidential TaskForce on Pension Fund, Abdulrasheed Maina into the Nigerian Civil Service.

Maina was dismissed from the Civil Service in 2013 and subsequently placed on the wanted list of Nigerian security agencies for fraud related offences.

He fled the country in the heat of allegation of what perhaps remains the biggest fraud case in the country with the police accusing him of misappropriating N100 billion Pension Fund.

Maina was at that time a level 14 officer (Assistant Director) in the Civil Service.

After lying low for 4 years, Maina  resurfaced in the same mysterious circumstances that implicate Nigeria’s security intelligence.

He however did not only resurfaced, he returned to a much more elevated position of Director in Human Resources Department of the Ministry of Interior.

A Point of Order from Isa Misau (Bauchi Central), drew senate attention to Maina’s return; alleging a high wired cover up by the AGF and by other people working closely with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He describes the entire episode as a “big embarrassment” to his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its mantra of change.

“This is a big embarrassment to this government.

How did he (Maina) come back?

Why were police officers attached to him,” he said.

Senate Chief Whip, Olusola Adeyeye is equally alarmed at what has happened, describing it as an insult to all Civil Servants and a dark moment for APC.

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for investigation into the matter, and immediately ordered the sack of Maina from the Civil Service.

Adeyeye wants the investigation thorough with Maina brought to justice.

He also calls on President Buhari to expose the two Ministers allegedly involved in the show of shame.

A few others like Senator, Atai Aidoko, (Kogi East), Albert Basset (Akwa Ibom Northeast)  and Dino Melaye (Kogi West) took turn to lash out heavily at the AGF whom they say has time after time abused his office.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu in his contribution wants both the AGF and the Head of Service summoned to face the Senate at plenary.

Anyanwu’s requests was turned down as Senate only reached a resolution to set up an Ad-hoc Committee to probe the circumstances surrounding entire Maina saga.

The ad-hoc committee is drawn from Senate standing Committees on Public Service, Judiciary, anti corruption and Interior.
