The Catalan Parliament has voted to declare Independence from Spain. The Speaker of the Assembly revealed that the Motion for Independence was passed in the 135-strong Assembly with 70 votes in favour, 10 votes against, and 2 blank ballots.

After the vote, the Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont, and Vice President, Oriol Junqueras, shared congratulatory handshakes and embraces. Thousands of Catalans, who gathered outside the Parliament building, also danced and cheered.

However, as if on cue, just 40 minutes after the declaration of Independence, the Spanish Senate in Madrid imposed Direct Rule in an attempt to dismantle Catalonia’s autonomy. This was disclosed by the Spanish Prime Minister on Twitter, and has led to fear of violence or even a civil war.

During his widely-applauded speech, the Prime Minister urged Lawmakers to dismiss the President, Vice President, and all Regional Ministers of the Catalan Government.

This could be trouble for Regional President, Carles Puigdemont, as he stands the risk of being arrested for sedition. Puidgemont has already sent his family over the border for their own safety.

As Spain attempts to impose rule on the rebellious Catalonia Region, violence may be just around the corner.
